Leading with Inclusion: What Now?

On February 11, YW Boston hosted “Leading with Inclusion: What Now?,” a webinar featuring expert panelists, Carolyn Brunis Luc, Christina Joseph, and Eric Nguyen, and moderated by Anouska Bhattacharyya, Ph.D. During the hour-long discussion, the panelists responded to audience questions about how to drive meaningful diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) outcomes despite political resistance and social pushback, strengthen organizational commitments to inclusion amid external pressures, and how to lead with intention.

Below, we’ve summarized some of the key lessons, strategies, and takeaways that emerged during the robust discussion:

Clear and Strategic Communication

Effective communication about DEI efforts is crucial, both internally and externally. Clear messaging is essential to avoid misinterpretations by opposing groups or anti-DEI entities. Organizations must be prepared to defend their DEI work through both legal channels and proactive, strategic discussions. Transparent and consistent communication protects the integrity of DEI initiatives and helps maintain credibility in challenging times.

Systemic Change Over Individual Action

DEI work is shifting from focusing solely on individual behavior change to addressing broader systemic issues within organizations. While individual efforts are important, systemic changes are needed for sustainable, organization-wide transformations. This shift ensures that DEI principles are more securely embedded in every aspect of the workplace, from leadership practices to organizational policies, leading to long-term, meaningful impact.

Risk Management in Messaging

Messaging around DEI, especially in times of societal and political change, can be complex. Organizations must understand the various risks—legal, social, and political — that can arise. By aligning messaging with core values and addressing employee concerns personally, organizations can navigate these challenges while staying true to their commitments. Strategic risk management ensures that DEI initiatives remain resilient, even in the face of external pressures.

Looking Ahead

As DEI efforts evolve, the need for clear communication, systemic change, and careful risk management will only grow. By staying informed about the changing DEI landscape, organizations can ensure their strategies are effective, sustainable, and aligned with both societal expectations and organizational goals. These steps help organizations create lasting, meaningful change that fosters inclusivity, belonging, and equity for all.
